Final Girls – Riley Sager

It is official, I have added Riley Sager to my auto-buy authors list. Final Girls is the second book I have read by him (Lock Every Door was the first) and honestly, it is something to rave about.

Final Girls is actually the first thriller novel by Riley Sager, I just happened to come across Lock Every Door first and was instantly hooked and then decided to start with his first novel and make my way through the rest. Sager’s books are stand-alone titles and therefore can be read in any order. So, I suggest, as soon as you see any of his titles buy it immediately.

I desperately wanted to read Final Girls and every time I went into some of the popular bookstores it was never on the shelf (this is not a reflection on the books availability, rather just the stores not making sure they have the title). I happened to stumble across a second hand bookstore and I was lucky enough to spot this copy. Needless to say, I didn’t even bother to look at any of the other books, I bought it and started it that night! It was well worth the search!

I was hooked from the first page! It is one of those books where you almost put your life on hold just to finish it. Every time I thought okay this is the last page then some new twist comes into play and I excitedly wanted to know what happens next. I was happy to sacrifice some sleep to get to the end.

One of the best things about the book is that you can’t predict how its going to end. As with most Whodunit books the author will always try to fool the reader and a direct them into thinking of a specific character as the perpetrator and then shocking us with the actual criminal, but with Final Girls, I suspected everyone from the victim in the story, to the alleged murderer to everyone in between! It was fun to suspect everyone and still be surprised in the end with who it was! I feel, few writers have this ability and Sager should be appreciated for this type of plot structure.

Final Girls is a glorious mix of horror movie gore and psychological suspense. I have credited Sager with this before in my review of Lock Every Door, he has an incredible ability to portray the female voice in his stories. The female characters are relatable from an emotional aspect and I think that adds value to us female readers.

Final Girls is an international bestseller and it went on to win the ITW Thriller Award for Best Hardcover Novel. This is a must read. You are missing out if you don’t pick this book up.

Lisa and Sam, are both dubbed Final Girls as they too are survivors of horrific mass murders. The only difference between the three girls is, Quincy doesn’t remember anything about the murder of her friends, except the man who killed them.

A decade later, Lisa is unexpectedly and mysteriously dead and Sam suddenly shows up on Quincy’s doorstep. The Final Girls reunited? A group Quincy fought hard to forget, is back in the media.
Are their murders linked?
Why can’t or won’t Quincy remember that night she survived?
What doesn’t she want to remember or is she hiding something about that night.
